A pumpkin in not a vegetable, it’s a fruit!

In fact, it’s a berry. Pumpkins belong to the family of Cucurbitaceae, which includes cucumbers, melons, squash and gourds. Within this family is the genus Cucurbita which includes gourds, winter and summer squash and all varieties of pumpkin.

  1. Most pumpkins are orange.

  2. They grow on all continents except Antarctica.

  3. Their name originates from the Greek word pepon [large melon].

  4. They are one of the most popular crops in the US.

  5. The oldest seeds of pumpkins were found in Mexico [around 7000bc].

  6. Pumpkins are used in all kinds of foods: soups, desserts, meals, juices…

  7. They are a super popular Halloween decoration.

  8. Almost all parts of a pumpkin are edible.
